Maintenance Laborer

A Maintenance Laborer(starting pay $6.80) is responsible for manual labor tasks in a wide variety ofjob assignments. Usually work isperformed under the immediate direction of a craftsman or supervisor, but manyroutine and repetitive tasks may be completed without difficulty, and undergeneral supervision, once learned. The Maintenance Laborer report to the Maintenance Supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
  • Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
  • Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. 
    Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
  • Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
  • Operate a jack hammer,paving breaker, or cement mixer.
  • Construct concreteforms, mix, and pour cement.
  • Prepare and patchdriveway and walkway surfaces.
  • Drive various zoovehicles including dump, pick up, and flatbed trucks; front end loaders; andaircraft tugs.
  • Operate a mechanicalsweeper or use a push broom.
  • Dig drainage ditches,clean culverts, and fill washouts.
  • Maintain zoo vehiclesand other powered equipment.
  • Perform tasks such asreplace hose bibs, light switches, door hinges, measuring, marking and cuttingdimension lumber, connect wood and metal structural material using commonfasteners.
  • Assist variouscraftspersons.
  • Any and all otherduties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Able to read, write,and understand English.
  • Knowledge of hand andpower tools and equipment used in performing assigned jobs.
  • Sufficient physicalstrength, coordination, and agility to lift from ground level, move ten feet,and return to point of origin 90 lb. objects.
  • Able to perform taskswhile bending, standing, kneeling, squatting, lifting, twisting, reaching, or sittingfor extended periods of time.
  • Able to performstrenuous labor under extreme weather conditions typical of south Texas, andunder extreme working conditions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional after-hour assignments.
  • Valid Texas driver's license.
