Graphics Supervisor
Effective immediately there is an opening for a Graphics Supervisor in the Education Department. The Graphic Supervisor is responsible for developing and overseeing the Zoo’s animal, conservation and education graphics. The Graphics Supervisor researches and prepares text for each graphic in an age-appropriate and engaging manner designed to influence guests to create a better future for wildlife. The Graphic Supervisor oversees the graphic process from start to finish including request, information gathering, design, product installation and maintenance. The Graphic Supervisor supervises the Graphic Designer and reports to the Education Manager.
- Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
- Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
- Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
- Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
- Work cooperatively with staff from a variety of departments and outside contractors to coordinate educational graphic process from start to finish including request, information gathering, design, production, installation and maintenance.
- Develop, research and compose ideas for educational graphics encouraging guests to know more, care more and do more for wildlife and conservation. Text for signs should be short, engaging and written at the 4th to 6th grade level.
- Ensure that animal, conservation and education graphics throughout the Zoo are well maintained, accurate, consistent, professional and appealing.
- Demonstrate a continued interest in and knowledge of graphics/exhibits and conservation education fields.
- Facilitate the bilingual graphics program.
- Collaborate with Zoo staff to insure accurate dissemination of information as well as maximum use of the Zoo’s resources to support conservation education.
- Provide support for volunteers and other members of the Education Department as needed.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
- Excellent knowledge of grammar and ability to communicate well orally and in writing.
- Ability to communicate difficult topics in an engaging way using limited text at the 4th to 6th grade level.
- Extensive knowledge in the fields of zoology, ecology and related topics.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow proper safety procedures.
- Knowledge of conservation education, visitor needs and current trends in exhibit graphics and interpretation techniques.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects and vendors/consultants.
- Knowledge of computer graphics software and design preferred.
- Ability to read and write proper Spanish preferred.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
- Five years of experience in project management, graphics, education or journalism.
- Two year’s supervisory experience.
- Proven experience transforming difficult concepts into clear, concise, easy to read and engaging text.
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communication, Biology or similar field.
- Prefer experience in environmental education or wildlife conservation
