Associate Veterinarian
Effective immediately the San Antonio Zoo’s Health Center has an opening for a Associate Veterinarian. The Associate Staff Veterinarian assists the Senior Staff Veterinarian in providing medical and surgical care and treatment to the Zoo animal collection. The Associate Staff Veterinarian implements and monitors the preventative medical health program, and works closely with the animal management staff, Health Center and Nutrition Center supervisors and personnel. The Associate Staff Veterinarian reports to the Senior Staff Veterinarian.
- Establish and maintain positive, cooperative, and effective working relations with fellow employees.
- Constantly exhibit a customer service attitude, a smile, and an obvious interest in visitor comfort and service.
- Communicate with the public in a courteous and tactful manner and assist visitors with questions and directions to various areas of the Zoo. Address the visitor - do not wait to be asked.
- Remove trash and debris from public areas; i.e. pick up litter whenever you see it.
- Provide medical and surgical treatment to the Zoo animal collection.
- Conduct post-mortem examinations and interpret findings.
- Implement the preventative medicine program including annual physical examinations, procedures for quarantine, parasite control, vaccination programs, TB testing, and periodic reviews of diets and husbandry techniques.
- Assist in ensuring the compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations relating to animal care and treatment.
- Review health related research requests from outside agencies.
- Ensure the medical records are updated and maintained to a high level of accuracy and professionalism.
- Monitor the pest control program such as chemicals used and disposition of dangerous and injurious pests.
- Monitor all potential zoonotic diseases and their impact on the collection and staff.
- Educate and inform the staff concerning zoonoses.
- Support AZA conservation and captive propagation research by collecting samples, gathering and submitting data to SSP’s.
- Any and all other duties as assigned.
- Ability to become efficient with all forms of chemical immobilization.
- Good surgical skills.
- Good communication skills, written and oral.
- Computer literate and able to become efficient with the ARKS and MedARKS systems.
- Knowledgeable and able to perform animal treatment humanely.
- Aware and prepared for the risk of human and animal exposure to dangerous drugs.
- High degree of confidence with all exotic and domestic species.
- Ability to work weekends, holidays and occasional after-hour assignments.
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited institution.
- Current license or the ability to obtain a license within 6 months to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Texas
- Ability to obtain a Texas Department of Public Safety and Federal Drug Enforcement Agency clearance for Class 2 narcotics.
- USDA accreditation in Texas to certify health animals for interstate and international transport.
- Two to three years experience as a veterinarian with the majority of time spent administering to exotic and/or zoo species.
