Japanese giant salamandersJapanese national treasures get a new home! The Zoo's Japanese giant salamanders were moved from their exhibit in Wild Wonders to their new home, a newly modified exhibit within the Tropical Waters area of the Kronkosky Tiny Tot Nature Spot. The new exhibit offers an up-close, underwater view of these amazing, critically threatened species. Truly giants, they can reach nearly five feet in length and weigh close to sixty pounds! Japanese giant salamanders are also long-lived; reaching fifty years of age in captivity is not uncommon. YOUR San Antonio Zoo maintains the largest captive group of Japanese giant salamanders in North America! During their transition, veterinarians were able to do a quick check-up on the salamanders before they were moved to their new exhibit. You can read more about their transfer here. We hope you come by soon to see them in their new exhibit!
