The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums has designated 2008 as the Year of the Frog to raise awareness of the amphibian extinction crisis and engage the public in related conservation efforts. In association with this international campaign, the San Antonio Zoo will leap into action with a new exhibit called TOADally opening February 29 – LEAP DAY!

Amphibians around the world are in trouble and need our help. Frogs are going extinct and so are toads, salamanders, newts, and the intriguingly unusual caecilians. In fact, the World Conservation Union (IUCN) estimates that at least one-third of known amphibian species are threatened with extinction. We need your help!

Join people around the world in celebrating 2008 Year of the Frog with the San Antonio¹s newest exhibit called, TOADally.

The Amphibian Crisis:

Of their 370 million year history, amphibians are now facing an unprecedented crisis. Out of roughly 6,000 amphibian species known to scientists, one-third are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss, pollution, and the recently emerged chytrid fungus. The chytrid fungus is a fatal infectious disease caused by a microscopic fungus that attacks amphibians' sensitive skin.

Scientists fear the planet may lose up to half of all amphibian species in our lifetime. Believe it or not - you can help! Below are eight simple things you can do TODAY for amphibians TOMORROW.

1. LEARN MORE. Spread the word that amphibians are in trouble.
2. ENJOY NATURE. Go outside and listen for frogs or look for toads and salamanders.
3. CREATE FROG-FRIENDLY BACKYARDS. Provide clean water and pesticide free hiding places – frogs love that.
4. VOLUNTEER. Study native frogs, toads, and salamander.
5. SAVE WATER. Check out www.saws.org for ideas.
6. DON’T POLLUTE. Always pick up your trash and dispose of liter properly.
7. UES LESS ENERGY.
8. ADOPT A FROG.  Help the San Antonio Zoo save amphibians through adoption.
