This great crowned pigeon (and first time dad) cares diligently for his young. The great crowned pigeon is the largest of the pigeon group. Currently, dad and chick are off exhibit, but you can see adult crowned pigeons in the Australia flight cage next to Lory Landing.

Caribbean flamingos, when hatched, are gray and white. As they mature, pink feathers grow throughout their body. And, at two-years old, they will turn to an orangey-pink color. These beautiful birds are located at the front entrance of the Zoo. There are four species of flamingos throughout the Zoo.

These prehistoric looking southern ground-hornbill chicks are pretty amazing. In the wild, two eggs are always laid, two chicks normally hatch, and one chick survives per clutch. We are very fortunate that both have survived. Ground-hornbills are meat-eaters and don’t need a lot of water. They get most of their water from what they eat. They don’t walk or stand until they are two months old. Chicks mature at four to five years. Currently, these two sisters are off exhibit, but you can see other species of ground hornbills next to the Cranes of the World.
