Have you had a chance to see “Sam” and
“Gina,” the Zoo’s new black leopards?
Their arrival was fast approaching, and the
anxious keepers worked quickly to
renovate the exhibit. Branches were added
for climbing, rock ledges to scale and nap
on, grass to roll about, and even a pool for
them enjoy.
This exhibit is very different from their
first home. Once kept in tiny cages and
substandard living conditions, these cats were rescued and are now under the expert care of the San Antonio Zoo keepers and vets. Though “Sam” is on a diet and will need a visit from the Zoo’s dentist, both cats are on their way to good health.
Located just across from the jaguars on the Zoo’s main path, “Sam” and “Gina” are still getting comfortable with their new home, and sometimes like to cuddle together inside their night house. So if you miss seeing them the first time, stop by again. They’re definitely worth the wait!
DID YOU KNOW … there’s no such thing as a black panther? This term refers to jaguars or leopards with a gene that makes a lot of the pigment melanin, turning their coats black. Do you know someone with brown freckles? Melanin made those spots, too.
